  • Shaun Leisher: If It Weren't for the Women, We'd Still Be Stuck in the Desert

This play is set in Philly so that hooked me from the very beginning. This is a very good play. I loved the ways that it explores Judaism and queerness but I appreciated that this isn't a play solely focused on oppression. It has higher goals. It's an immensely intellectual piece of theatre. I was very moved by the human drama but I also walked away having learned something about Rahab and the Jewish faith. I loved the supernatural elements of this play and how seamlessly they fit in the narrative. PRODUCE THIS PLAY!!!

  • Shaun Leisher: The Empty Space

I'm a fan of experimental theatre with few stage directions. The possibilities are endless for actors, directors and designers. This is a beautiful play that kept me enthralled the whole time. I loved the poetry of the dialogue. I loved how all the characters represent these huge concepts but still feel so deeply human. This play took me on a journey as it explored some pretty weighty existential concepts. Wasn't sure where this play was going but as I read I leaned into the mystery and way punched in the gut by the end.

  • Shaun Leisher: FRANKENSTEIN; OR A MODERN PROMETHEUS

This play is the work of art based Mary Shelly's Gothic classic that really made me see the humanity in this story. This play focuses less on the creation of the monster and more on the rationale behind what Victor does and how it impacts others. This is a play full of yearning in both the straight and queer variety. It's a play that looks at what happens when those we care about change. It's also a play about how toxic shame can be. This play is a great way for actors to experiment and make bold choices.

  • Shaun Leisher: Boy My Greatness

This is a beautiful period piece that also feel so very relevant. It's not hard to see the connection between what is happening here and out own plague that directly impacted the arts. This is a play about the love of acting. I loved how the play explores the tenderness and passion between men in such a nuanced way. I love how gender expansive casting for this is. This is the kind of play that can breed empathy for those outside of the gender binary. This should be a staple for all Shakespeare focused companies.

  • Shaun Leisher: Elizabeth

Great ensemble piece that gives chances for all actors to really shine. I appreciated how this play attempts to honor Elizabeth Short by making sure that audiences know her name and who she was beyond just being the Black Dahlia. This is a play that needed to be written by a woman. In our true crime obsessed world, victims (especially female victims) are not shown as their complex selves. Their lives are sensationalized and they are objectified. This play attempts to change that and I think it does a great job.

  • Shaun Leisher: #Graced

I'm very interested in plays that theatricalize the online world. They don't always work but I can see Garcia's vision being realized in a really effective way with some smart directing. Also, this is a road play so that brings along its own set of exciting challenges. How do you convey so many different locations with the limitations of theatre? I loved this play. I love how it explores queerness. I love how funny it is. I love how it destroys the notion that all Latine people are the same.

  • Shaun Leisher: Bedfellows

Beyond the decadent outfits and times of political unrest, this is at its core a story of two young women that are struggling to understand their place in the world. Two young women that deeply love each other but will always be separated by their social standing. I loved how this play allows these women to dream of a world outside of the strict boxes society has placed them. It broke my heart when I realized they could never escape them though. I loved the physicality of this play and how much was said in glances and embraces.

  • Shaun Leisher: Say 'NO' to One Paseo

The playwright does a beautiful job capturing intimacy between these two best friends. We get to see them navigate the innocence of pre-teen years, the messiness of early sexual experiences and ultimately the journey to realizing who they each truly are. This isn't a perfect friendship by any means. These grow apart. They aren't always honest about how they feel. Outside relationships pull them in different directions. But in the end B and Ree are always there for each other. Definitely one I'd like to see produced soon.

  • Shaun Leisher: Swimmer

I know Dennis-Yates says that this play can be done very simply but it's begging for a big, lavish production. How cool would it be for a real pool to be on stage? This play feels like an Old Hollywood period piece while also being so grounded in the present. Drive and ambition in women is such rich subject matter and Dennis-Yates mines it really well. This play does a great job at exploring what it means to follow one's dreams and how human connection can be all we really need. This has to be so fun to perform.

  • Shaun Leisher: UNFAIR ADVANTAGE

The playwright does a great job at taking such a hot button issue and exploring it in such a relatable way. These characters make decisions that they all believe are right in their own ways. They are trying to make sense of the world and the idea of fairness in our society. There are definitely people in this play that do wrong and hurtful things but the playwrights makes sure they are human and not stereotypical villains. I really want to see this produced and see how the fantasy elements are realized.
