  • Shaun Leisher: A Sisyphus Play, or, Talking and Talking About Sexual Assault and Expecting A Different Result Is Starting To Make Me Feel Insane. Do You Feel The Same?

A really compelling use of metaphor to tell the story of sexual assault and the power of sharing one's story. Great use of theatricality and absurdity to bring about needed conversation.

Finding it hard to remember a play looks at natural instinct as brilliantly as this one. The language, characters and world created here left me breathless as I read it. This play is both timeless and completely urgent and poses questions that we have always talked about. Can't wait for someone to produce this fearless piece of theatre.

  • Shaun Leisher: My Father's Keeper

A tight and intense look at how families deal with the truth and tragedy. Families revealing secrets on stage isn't anything new rarely have I seen it done with this much heart and honesty.

  • Shaun Leisher: How To Destroy An American Girl Doll

This play really goes there and we are so lucky that it does. It's a play that explores eating disorder in a brutal and messy way. No easy answers are given here and everything isn't tied up with a bow. The hope in this play is not found in overcoming illness but in identifying it and continuing on. Rosenberg has written brilliant characters in such an honest way. No one is a hero or victim or villain. Everyone is just trying to get through life the best they know how. Produce this play and start listening to those that struggle.

  • Shaun Leisher: Gray Mare

A brutal play that takes well worn kind of play and turns it on its head to dissect toxic masculinity. The women in this play are so complex and beautifully written. A story that needs to be told and treated as a warning to men that oppress the women in their lives.

A really bad ass sci-fi play that looks at the risks one must take by letting others into their lives. The stage directions and picture of the world being painted here are brilliant. Would love to see this produced soon!!

  • Shaun Leisher: Adaptive Radiation

If like me you are done with naturalistic plays about young people going through quarter life crises then this is the play for you. Benitez has filled this play with magic as it explores a generations relationship with an exploitative system. It's hysterical, exciting and will leave you re-thinking your existence.

Turnage has created a character in Lula that is so unapologetically filled with rage at a world that so badly treats women. A world that pits women against each other and it's only through the telling of stories that connections are formed. This play is about using platforms to tell truths to anyone who listens even when the one who most needs to hear is oneself. A powerful play that needs to be produced in our current era of #MeToo.

  • Shaun Leisher: Éléphant

A play that beautifully captures the wonder and innocence of childhood along side the horrors of this world. A play that looks at the horrors of child prostitution in the past while also being a reminder that this is a very real problem today all around the world. Pollitt gives us a look into the lives of these women that do what they must to survive and refuses to judge them. She only presents the character’s truth and forces the viewer to bear witness.

This play is a mindf**ck in the best possible way. It looks at the absurdities of war by using tropes from theatre of the absurd while also exploring ideas such as the complicity of the “innocent” in war and what happens after “victory” especially to those in minority groups. Would love to see this play fully realized soon. The imagery in the stage directions is so visceral and every line got me more and more anxious to see skilled actors take on these roles.
