Artistic Statement

My plays concern themselves with a variety of topics but most frequently focus on: masculinity, race, and location. I love plays that speak to place, and as a result, my biggest source of inspiration is probably the work of August Wilson. I'm very much a fan of the big American dramas and draw energy from playwrights like Edward Albee and Eugene O'Neill. I'm also quite fond of the theatrical magic (and almost surreal nature) in the works of Sarah Ruhl, Paula Vogel, and Tony Kushner. In some ways, my plays seek to add to the conversation of what realism means to the American playwright. Additionally, I like to bring in a variety of influences outside of theatre, including: novels, film, video games, and visual artists. My two most recent plays also investigate technology, internet culture, and their impact on daily life.
