Artistic Statement

“My goal is to learn, let go, and get out of my own way to become my authentic playwriting self.”

My stories are inspired by the history around us: an examination of one's past, and a look at how their present creates a moment in the history of a world. I don’t write history plays per se, but I look at playwriting like an historian; as ward of a story, who takes a deep dive into the past and present of a character and their circumstances, and then builds an active narrative for performance, which an audience can then decide its importance. Once the first draft is on the page, I work toward reconciling the competing voices in my head; between objectivity, subjectivity and an open heart of discovery, to the best of my ability. My hope is to keep my mind open to new discoveries along the creation's journey; then revise and ponder and revise and ponder and more revision and ponderance to work toward a better understanding of the discreet contradictions between the physical state of a character and their nuanced essence. Learning, all the while, to trust the process.
