  • Emily Hageman: Runed (a spoof of M.R. James' "Casting the Runes")

I was lucky enough to see a recording of this play being performed at the Heartland Ten-Minute Play Festival, and I do mean LUCKY. This play is absolutely HILARIOUS! Perfect, zinging dialogue, HILARIOUSLY weird and delightful premise--truly an actor's, director's, designer's, and AUDIENCE'S dream comedy. I cannot believe how perfectly this play is crafted. Pure delight from the beginning to it's perfect end (one of the best comedy ends I've ever read). A true show-stopper guaranteed to make you bust a gut.

  • Emily Hageman: Hooded or Being Black for Dummies

This is a phenomenal play. I cannot recommend it enough. It's impossible to stop reading it once you start. One of the most unique structures I've ever seen leads us to a daring, brilliant, engaging storyline full of characters that you love within only a few pages of reading about them. The "laugh light" is one of the neatest devices I've ever encountered in a play. Read this now, or better yet, get it on stage where it belongs so it can be seen by every single person. This is about as perfect as a play can get.

  • Emily Hageman: Self Promoted

Austgen's voice is witty and sharp and this ten-minute play is perfectly crafted, just like the crafty scheme of one of the coworkers. This play is a great example of human comedy--giving us three very real people to, at different times, root for and boo and cheer and groan. People are funny--but Austgen treats them and all their confusion with love and compassion.

  • Emily Hageman: Storm Clouds for Lonely Hearts

Beautiful, lyrical piece with a fantastic structure. Hernandez writes his stage directions as poems, and his dialogue is about as real as it gets. This play is vivid and jumps right off the page. A really lovely read--and it would be pure joy to watch this performed. A gorgeous and sweet celebration of connection and love where we don't expect it.

  • Emily Hageman: The Loneliest Road in America - Part of the "United Plays of America" Anthology (Nevada)

I adore the way Haas writes sisters. They have such a deep, natural relationship--and Beth and Letia are polar opposites. I love how Mom's urn is an odd third character. I couldn't stop smiling as I read this play--it's silly and crazy and ridiculous, but it's tender and heartfelt and a little spooky. Two actresses would love this hilarious ten minute play--and audiences would connect too.

  • Emily Hageman: Orange

A truly beautiful play. A seamless story about a very unique girl and all the people she encounters on her adventure. Leela is a fantastic character--a character who is disabled, but the whole play isn't ABOUT her disability. It's vivid and lovely and full of pure wonder--like a modern Alice in Wonderland. Very beautiful play that is begging to be staged.

  • Emily Hageman: elephants

Just remarkable. Henry has such a gift for making you feel in such a short amount of time. The writing here is poetic and beautiful and profoundly sad. Every line is sweet with poignancy and a melancholy tenderness. This is a heartbreaker of a play and well-worth a read. An excellently crafted ten minute play.

  • Emily Hageman: FRIENDS WITH GUNS

This play is one of the best I've read on NPX. It's more than deserving of its awards. In fact, it needs more awards. Lots more awards--all of them. It is funny and tense and realistic and absolutely terrifying and timely and the structure is so perfect and I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about this play. I feel like I just took a masterclass. Expect to see Stephanie Alison Walker's name a LOT more with writing like this. Read this play immediately and then produce it with your best actors, best designers, and best director.

  • Emily Hageman: Everlasting Chocolate Therapy: A Ten Minute Play

An extremely cute ten minute play with a very clever idea. This play is clearly a crowd pleaser, even just reading it. Brings up some GREAT points about its source material and works fantastically as parody. Great roles for actors and a director would have a lot of fun with this--not to mention figuring out how to make a girl blue! Hilarious one-liners and funny banter with a surprisingly poignant monologue in the middle. Well done, Hayet!

  • Emily Hageman: Better (Short)

A truly great funny, meaningful, tight ten-minute play. A fantastic character study achieved in such a short period of time. We only know Ruth and Donna for ten minutes, but we know everything about them. A hilarious, but deeply sad story about two people mired with resentment and unfulfilled dreams. Great title, poignant, fun, and about as perfect as you can get in a two-hander.
