  • Mutability

Anyone who has grown up in a small town or been around small town mentalities needs to read this play. Lovers of crime dramas need to read this play. Lovers of ghost stories need to read this play.
The way Rushing juggles humor and horror in MUTABILITY has catapulted it to the top of my list of things I need to see onstage. It's a fantastic blend of Tennessee Williams and Sam Shepard's sensibilities with the punch and zip of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.

I had the pleasure of listening to "Ain't the Biggest City" on the Gather by the Ghost Light podcast last week. There's plenty of fun twists and turns to be found here, juicy for actors and audiences alike. I've been a longtime admirer of Rushing's work and he makes a great showing here in this ten minute, pulse pounding play that has you asking "what would I do?"

I had the pleasure of seeing this as part of the Harrisburg Fringe Festival. It was my first time experiencing a Choose Your Own Play, but it was easy to tell that David's piece is a masterclass in how to write in that style. The play really leans into the camp of a fantasy and horror story and is full of laughs. The play holds a surprising amount of tension for audiences, coming from the choices they force the characters to make throughout the play's runtime.

My only regret is not being able to see it more than once.

I had the pleasure of seeing the play at the Harrisburg Fringe Festival. The play is an experimental trip that wraps you in surrealism and holds you close.

Rivkin's command of language is superb and is certainly a playwright to have your eye on - I know I will.

Having tackled this pair myself, it was refreshing to read the likes of Anne and Mary come to life in the words of another playwright. I've quickly become a fan of SMJ .'s work - their wit and charm is on full display as this script is packed to the brim with it. If you ever wondered if historically based theatre can be fun, look no further, yo ho (a pirate play about anne bonny & mary read) will give you a definitive answer to that. This is one that will stay with me.

The charisma this script oozes is beyond palpable. Stoller juggles a large ensemble well, each character driving us towards wedding bells that may ring a sour note if you listen close enough.

Catching up with college friends can always be a roller coaster, but Accepts With Pleasure goes off the rails in the best way. I thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

A beautiful exploration of faith, violence, and the misconceptions we make against our fellow man. Salant and Dunn's command of the page makes this a play sure to be a breath of fresh air - and a play that takes your breath away. It is the kind of play one would walk out of and feel changed, and would drive one to bring about change in the world around them. It is good theatre. It is important theatre. And I feel better for having read it.

As someone who writes about grief regularly, this monologue really hits me hard. It starts with a chuckle follows it with a tear. Sure enough, though, by the end it is wiped away and you are left with a comfort and calm that sticks with you.
This is one I'll come back to again and again. A laugh, a sob, and a hug received, all in about ten minutes. That's damn good writing.
  • The Inseparables
    6 May. 2021
Young has given us a love letter to Dumas' source material and theatre itself with "The Inseparables." There wasn't a moment in this script I wasn't engaged. The chaos - the glorious chaos of this woefully unprepared company of artists was a joy to read - and I hope to see it staged soon.

    It's got stage combat!
    It's got wonderful emotional gut-punches!
    It's got puppets!

What are you waiting for? Read it. Produce it.
  • Before The Fire

I'm always delightfully surprised when a ten-minute play succeeds in creating an enticing drama - and gollie, does "Before the Fire" pack one hell of a punch. Come back to the title when you're done and do some thinking - a wonderful, if tragic, cherry on top of this theatrical masterclass.
