Artistic Statement

Artistic Statement

I believe in writing plays that tell good stories, challenge actors, inspire directors and designers, and leave audiences feeling as if they were an integral part of the artistic experience.

I believe theatre can bring us to tears, make us laugh until we cry, or allow us to witness the internal lives of those it brings us in contact with – people we would never know if not for our theatrical experience.

I believe theatre can be silly, outrageous, nonsensical, absurd, moving, deep, political, human, inhuman, inspiring, revolutionary, transformational...I believe theatre can be anything.

I believe theatre supports and celebrates communities, both locally and worldwide.

I believe theatre shows humanity at its best and worst and transforms us all in ways that go beyond time and place.

And finally, as Eugene Ionesco said, I believe “theatre is not literature, it is simply that which cannot be expressed by any other means.”
