  • Emily McClain: Lunch

In this really wonderful dark comedy, Dominica Plummer gives us two extremely self-centered-but-remarkably-likable characters in Rose and Ally. The audience will be on tenderhooks once it becomes clear Leo isn't where he's supposed to be, the comic pace amps up, and then the resolution is SO satisfying! Brilliant work!

  • Emily McClain: Pudding

In the time it takes to make a bowl of instant pudding, we experience a character's struggle to find a small, desperate comfort in a very stressful and difficult moment in their life. This play is aching for directors and performers to explore the potential and possibilities within those few minutes. Fantastic work!

  • Emily McClain: Sometimes a Sandwich is Just a Sandwich

This 10 minute play is so brilliantly crafted! So full of witty dialogue and charming characterizations. It provides such an amazing metaphor for relationships and for the need for both novelty AND comfort. This play would be an excellent addition to a 10 minute play festival because it has such fantastic characters that are completely flexible for any casting opportunity. Highly recommend!

  • Emily McClain: Wolf & Pig (a one-minute play)

An absolutely elegant 1 minute play, with a cross-species love story that I didn't know I needed but now desperately want more!

  • Emily McClain: How to Talk to Your Child About BDSM

As cringe-inducing as this play is (in the ABSOLUTE best and most HILARIOUS ways!), what I loved most of all was the way both parents actually leaned into the recognition that no simple hand-waving, parental-Jedi-mind-tricks were gonna get them out of the awkwardness. Only honest, forthright, and ultimately very sex-positive discourse will do. Is the kid gonna be scarred for life? Probably. But he'll have a healthier way to process it with his future therapist. Good job, Mom & Dad!

  • Emily McClain: The Politics of Fabulousness

Enjoyed listening to the recorded performance of this play with the Quarantine Players. The dialogue is smart and the characters are passionate advocates for their positions. In this classic take on the "problem play," the characters wrestle with thorny contemporary issues and ultimately find only a temporary, uneasy peace. The songs are clever and really entertaining, and the confessional-style monologues allow for depth and exploration beyond the polemic arguments they engage in during the scenes. The discussions to follow performances of this play will be extremely important and need to...

  • Emily McClain: In the Slush

This play twists and turns and constantly surprises! Prillaman creates a world that is familiar but still exquisitely, ridiculously dangerous. I loved the surreal dream sequences SO much! Wonderful and exciting work!

  • Emily McClain: SLEEPING BEAUTY ISN'T GOING TO SAVE YOU

This play is a brilliant sci-fi/fantasy where well known fairy tales have taken on religious significance. In a genre that often tokenizes female characters to be just one thing (badass fighter, wise immortal fairy queen, damsel in distress, etc etc), Cross creates a wonderfully intense world populated with complex, morally flawed but deeply relatable female characters. Themes of sacrifice, legacy, survival and what we owe to each other are all explored in this fast paced play. Excellent work!

  • Emily McClain: A LITTLE LITERARY ANALYSIS - a monologue

I love when smart characters go OFF on something they feel passionately about, and do so with acidic eloquence and biting wit. Wendy's literary take-down is so sharp. Gabby is lucky to have someone like Wendy in her bridal party. This is an awesome comedic monologue for actresses!

  • Emily McClain: In Memory of Maria Mercader (monologue)

As we become overwhelmed with the sheer enormity of the death toll from COVID-19, we can never be allowed to forget that each of those untold numbers represents a beautiful human being. O'Grady celebrates the spirit of light and warmth that her friend Maria was to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Although our collective grieving has yet to truly begin, as a society still in the throes of this horrible pandemic, monologues like this one serve as a reminder of our connections to each other and it makes space for healing to be possible.
