  • Emily McClain: Another Park, Another Sunday

This is a lovely nod to Our Town's premise, but with a distinctly contemporary flavor. Jill and Allen are authentic and compelling characters and their friendship is the emotional center of this play. I enjoyed hearing it aloud tremendously and found myself thinking about it the next day-- always the hallmark of a good story, in my opinion. It is a beautiful and moving piece! Thank you for writing it!

  • Emily McClain: Winter on the Cusp of Sagittarius

The two characters in this play are both dealing with the aftermath of a terrible act, but that act does not fully define either one of them- and that is the compelling power of the piece in a nutshell. Sickles never shies away from challenging material but embraces the complexity and raw emotion. This story brings up so much that is worthy of discussion and dissection- it would be an excellent start to a short play festival.

  • Emily McClain: Damaged

I had the pleasure of hearing this play read aloud and it is such a devestatingly honest portrayal of the preconceptions we carry and how that shapes our interactions with others, especially people with disabilities. It concludes with an exquisite monologue expounding on the transformative power of love and acceptance (and a picture perfect "button" ending). Great work!

  • Emily McClain: Win and Tim and the Unlikelihood of Living Forever [a 1-minute play]

Steven G. Martin is a true master of the 1 Minute Play! This glimpse into Win & Tim's peaceful, idyllic August asks us to consider the number of Augusts we all have left. To tackle such a weighty question with such grace and delicacy is the true gift of this play. Nothing gold can stay, of course, but acknowledging the preciousness of the moment while still IN the moment is a rare treasure. Thank you for this gift!

  • Emily McClain: APEX PREDATOR

You cannot be a woman in this world and not feel the hairs on the back of your neck raise from the opening moments of this 10 min play. The tension is masterfully paced, becoming more ominous with each page, and the recognition of isolation and danger is so palpable. I would LOVE to see this piece performed and used as a jumping off point for discussions on college campuses- specifically the exploration of the power dynamics of the two male characters. How can we change society so we can count owls in peace? That's the goal, folks.

  • Emily McClain: It's an Espresso Drink with Foamy Steamed Milk

You will 100% cringe in recognition at these self-absorbed idiots- or if you don't, perhaps you should cringe all the more? We are a world on the brink of climate crisis, annihilation of our species, destruction of the planet.... but mmmmm I do love macchiatos! #blessed #TeamMeteor

  • Emily McClain: Chuck's Mom

The overwhelming ocean of rage and grief, the toxic cocktail of shame and guilt, and the isolating nature of a mother's sorrow... this is a POWERFUL piece of theatre. The opioid & heroin epidemic deserves our full attention and both this and the companion play, "How To Be A Respectable Junkie," bring incredible humanity to this silent crisis. These are not easy topics by any means, but they are important and Vovos' captivating command of language and character bring it out of the darkness.

  • Emily McClain: McIntosh

I'm so upset that I didn't print out a copy of this play to post on the callboard alongside the cast list of my own production of Wizard of Oz. The subversive message of the play is so excellently crafted into the recognizable theatre kid "tropes" and I enjoyed it tremendously! Great work!

  • Emily McClain: 80 Cards

This play encapsulates the power and dynamic possibilities of non-traditional storytelling. It's engaging and darkly comic at points and would be a wonderful conversation-starter about existentialism and theatre. Extremely original work!

  • Emily McClain: ME DIRECT

A tongue-in-cheek love letter to community theatre, to scrappy, enthusiastic but maybe not so talented actors, and to the director's "visions" that perhaps need another production meeting or two before going live. Me Direct celebrates the foibles of everyone's favorite cryptid. It's been so long since we've been in a crazy rehearsal, this play was a delightful reminder of the joys (and frustrations) that accompany performances. Thank you!
