  • Rand Higbee: To The Moon!

A short and quick little play about a man who won a free trip to the Moon. The thing is, he's afraid of the Moon. You know how it always follows us around and such? This is a cautionary "Be careful what you wish for tale" from Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend that also happens to be quite funny.

  • Rand Higbee: The Menu

I was drawn to this play by the genre description: "Dark comedy, faith-based, fantasy, science fiction..." I'm thinking, really? How can all of those fit into one short play? But after reading the first line I said "Okay. I get it now."

I don't believe I had ever read anything by playwright Cindi Sansone-Braff, but if this fun, quirky little short is any indication of her style, I will have to read more.

  • Rand Higbee: The Disappearing Diamonds: From The Casebook of Beak E. Baxter

Fun and funny little crime spoof in the style of 1940s Hollywood film noir. Made for young audiences, but the adults will enjoy it just as much. It left me wondering: Does Beak E Baxter solve any other cases? I will become a detective and search through Robert Weibezahl's other plays to find out.

  • Rand Higbee: OCEAN FRONT (Short Play)

When does forever not mean forever? Or does it really ever? A nice, simple little slice-of=life play from Tom Cavanaugh about an attempt to memorialize forever something that is only ephemeral.

  • Rand Higbee: Closedbook

I was drawn to this play because I dabble in sci-fi plays myself. Then I was drawn into it by, amongst many other reasons, Kelly McBurnette-Andronicos' use of Midwest idioms. (Yeah, No.) This is a fun, quick play that answers the burning question: Is there internet after death?

  • Rand Higbee: A First-Draft Second-Rate Love Story

A fun and funny love story where the actors are playing off different drafts of the script. Kudos to John Busser who must have had excellent notes to make this all work. In other hands this could have been just a confusing mess, but Busser brings it all togther to work like a charm.

  • Rand Higbee: THE BEAUTY OF A ROSE

I was drawn to this play because some of the plays I write myself are rather sci-fi in nature. Jack Levine didn't let me down. He has written a quick but thought provoking little gem here that I can almost hear Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy arguing over. Read for yourself! It's fast!

  • Rand Higbee: And Be Gay

"And Be Gay" is essentially a one-joke play and if you write a one-joke play that joke better be funny. No worries! It is! A very quick, fun read from DC Cathro. What are you waiting for?

  • Rand Higbee: Stuck in the Middle

I saw a reading of this play at the 2019 Valdez Theatre Conference, so I was happy to find it here on NPX so that I could relive the silliness. Did I just refer to it as silly? Well, yes. But any play that speaks of an "Eternal Bed of Dough" obviously has its thoughtful side as well.

  • Rand Higbee: A Science Thing

A small slice of life play where an adult son meets up with his estranged mother he has not seen since he was six years old. The play is at times funny and at times sad, but the emotion that comes through the most is one of hope. One is left yearning to see scene 2.
