Frequently, my ideas come from within, but I have come to realize that many of my stories stem from the discovery of a quirky and compelling morsel of trivia. I write to satisfy an inquisitive nature, to tilt my head at the world and wonder…
Lincoln’s bodyguard and John Wilkes Booth were in the same bar only moments before the president was shot? I wrote a fictionalized conversation in which the bodyguard unknowingly convinces Booth to go through with it… Hasbro actually trademarked the scent of Play-Doh? I set a ten-minute play in a patent office, where a teacher confronts the attorney who turned an icon of childhood into a corporate opportunity… After a clerical error, the Selective Service accidentally sent over 14,000 draft notices to WWI soldiers? I wrote a short piece in which the undead arrive to register.
