I laughed, I cried, I feared the estrogen-sensitive giant flesh-eating lobsters! What a fun little play that subverts the usual family melodrama into hilarity with heart!

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: This Grass Kills People

I had the pleasure of seeing a production of This Grass Kills People in July 2023. From the minute the play begin, I was hooked. The play is a fable, but deftly done. It's the perfect play for 2023 and a reflection on "post pandemic" life.

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: Walter Mercado presents: a queer Puerto Rican (not just) Christmas Spectacular

I had the pleasure of seeing a reading of this through Avant Bard's Scripts in Play festival, and thoroughly enjoyed this play! The play displayed a thoughtful and culturally-responsive approach to gender identity; I was particularly struck by the lines about Walter's gender being Walter and the beautiful guidance all 3 ghosts gave Zee. I look forward to following the evolution of this play and hope to see a full production one day!

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: The River East

This was a deep and complex, riveting play with rich and interesting characters, superb stage directions, and a unique blend of prose, poetry, and classical texts. The playwright gave nuance to those living with addiction, religion, and loss. The achievement of the play is that it was a love letter to a city that never appears onstage- Philadelphia. Congratulations and well done on this play!

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: PASTOR JOAN HARTLEY OF OPEN HOUSE CHRISTIAN IN INDIANA: A SERMON: A MONOLOGUE

"We need more than paint, don't we?" This important monologue speaks about the relationship between the Christian church and equity. At a time when so many narratives speak of bigoted religious beliefs, it's a relief to hear a sermon of love and acceptance, no matter what you're identity. The playwright crafted a work where we feel real empathy for the pastor and the seriousness which she approaches her mission. Well done!

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: Husk

I had the pleasure of seeing this play at the Boo Festival this weekend. It was a very gripping play that offers excellent roles for 3 actors, especially for the roles of Abel and Eve. Proctor writes in a very lyrical speech that evokes another world and era entirely.

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: A Jumping-Off Point

This was one of the most interesting and engaging plays I've read in a while. There were lines--"what was the fifth's name?"--that literally made me gasp and scream out loud. This play is so rich because the three characters in it were complex and real. Just like life, there are no 100% villians and no 100% heroes, but the message the play is trying to impart is clear and cuts through. I hope that I will have the chance to this play in person one day.

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: Afterthought

What a sweet story that ended up somewhere completely different than where I thought it was going! Well done. I was gobsmacked by the ending, and drawn in by the humor along the way.

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: Penny Ransom

I would love to see this play in a ten minute festival! I laughed out loud at the bumbling kidnappers and was taken for a ride at the end. Congrats!

  • Alli Hartley-Kong: Spin Cycle

This is a lovely little meet-cute set in a very commonplace location. Mandy and Jim are generally kind and nice people; it's impossible not to want the best for them. It would be a pleasure to see this staged!
