Artistic Statement

I write plays to change the stories we believe in, because that’s the best way I know to change the world we live in. My provocation to write comes from the myths and legends that have shaped my world, whether those are classical tales like the myths of Medusa or the Furies, or whether they are American myths like the metaphors of America as a melting pot or a beacon to the world. Typically, my plays explore hidden truths of gender, ethnicity, and power. But whatever their subject matter, they bring marginalized characters to the center of the action and unheard voices to the heart of the conversation. I seek to engage audiences in the conversation too by making my work accessible to people of diverse ages and backgrounds and by raising more questions than I answer.
