  • Cassandra Rose: Well-Intentioned White People

I loved this play the second I started reading it. Not only does this play give a frank view of liberal racism, but it also centers on queer characters of color, including a trans man! Hooray for intersectionality!

  • Cassandra Rose: This Bitter Earth

Such a wonderful play. The nonlinear narrative of this couple's politically-charged relationship creates an intimate puzzle that draws you in. You completely understand their frictions, while also hoping that they'll make it through unscathed. I was a crying mess by the end of the About Face production of this play.

  • Cassandra Rose: Helen Keller and Me

I'm proud to say that a reading of this piece was part of the 2018 Chicago Theatre Marathon: I Am An American. Sarah bravely places herself front and center in this piece that explores the life of one of the most famous disabled Americans, AFTER the miracles have been worked. Along the way, Sarah opens up about her own life and disabilities with a vulnerability that other playwrights rarely share with their audiences. Highly recommend!

  • Cassandra Rose: His Shadow

Forget the super bowl. Remember His Shadow. This play deftly shows how every personal act is a political one whenever the powers-that-be decide a person's very existence is threatening. Don't sleep on the new play by the author of THE LIGHT!

  • Cassandra Rose: Hooded or Being Black for Dummies

I saw this play at First Floor Theatre in Chicago this past year. It was one of my favorite productions of 2018. This play will make your white audience feel uncomfortable. Good.

  • Cassandra Rose: God Said This

A truthful and heartwrenching story about what loss and grief really look like. There won't be a dry eye in the house when this play ends.

  • Cassandra Rose: CHARM

I saw this play at Northlight in 2015 and immediately fell in love with this ensemble of characters. This is where the bar is set, friends. This is a play with heart AND grit. This play isn't afraid to let its characters be messy, confused, or unpolished. Just like in real life, none of these characters have all the answers. And yet they're all still willing to become better people, together. More plays like this please.

  • Cassandra Rose: With Love and a Major Organ

I saw Strawdog Theatre Company's 2015 production of this play and was immediately taken by the script's sincerity. This is not a play that pushes past the awkward or indecisive moments. Instead, it lets us sit in them and examine them. How do we connect in a world of missed connections?

  • Cassandra Rose: ELEVEN

A brilliant snapshot of every push and pull conversation/argument/heart-to-heart that tweenage girls have with their mothers, and vice-versa. Oh to be young and angsty again.

  • Cassandra Rose: North Star

I had the honor of reading a recent draft of this out loud over the weekend. This work flirts with the line between sentimentality and brutality, between heightened fantasy and stark reality. This summer camp will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
