  • DC Cathro: McDonalds (a monologue)

A powerful piece, rich in character and detail, history and life. The path Kim takes us on rolls along, sometimes meandering, and sometimes briskly, and you might think you know where it leads, but… This piece will leave an impact.

  • DC Cathro: Superheroes

As someone who grew up watching “Super Friends” and working in comic book shops, I’ll admit I was drawn in by the title. The play, though, speaks to what can be really heroic in the real world. Fantasy and life collide in this short but funny and thoughtful piece. A good read for super hero and non-super hero fans alike, and hopefully inspiring for folks to be super in their everyday existence.

  • DC Cathro: Protocols

Wow, this horror-slash-Zoom drama packs an emotional punch, considering the topics. You wouldn’t expect this from a short play about extermination techniques of vampires and/or zombies, but Gatton quite effectively pulls at your heart strings. Really great work.

  • DC Cathro: Miracle on Nevada State Route 375 [a 1-minute play]

It is a wonder, the stage pictures that Martin creates in his one-page works. I marvel at his talents in shaping entire lifetimes and landscapes in just a few words. The joy of Gale, the rage of Simone, highs and lows and everything in between. Simply stunning. Beautiful words that create beautiful pictures, all in a page or two.

  • DC Cathro: Light Switch

A beautiful window into a world that most of us can only imagine, “Light Switch” is playful, sexy, sad, and wondrous. The characters are rich and rounded, and the show is full of linguistic and visual joy. An amazing piece that draws you in and propels you toward a lovely and satisfying conclusion. Fantastic!

  • DC Cathro: A Moment of Clarity

The smallest moments can be the most important, leave the biggest impression. Williams captures the emotion and love of one of these moments in this piece beautifully. A lovely short work, powerful and touching in its simplicity.

  • DC Cathro: Man Boobs

This script starts out sexy and passionate (definitely for mature audiences) but shifts into a serious drama about body issues, sexuality, and self image. It’s a difficult subject and features body types not usually seen on stage in these types of roles, which is wonderful to see despite the unhappy circumstances. “Man Boobs” features great dialogue between really strong characters that would be electric to see live, and even though the characters are gay, you will see some of yourself or someone close to you in this play, no matter who you are or your body type.

  • DC Cathro: I Saw This in Paducah!

A ten-minute play that pokes fun (sometimes lovingly, sometimes… eh… not so much) at ten-minute play festivals! I’d totally go see a ten-minute play festival with this script in it! But it’s not completely fun and games, Espey slips in a message or two about racism and white privilege. Hilarious, easy to produce, a tad “meta” and thought provoking… All in all, a big thumbs up.

  • DC Cathro: The Adventures of Aphrodite Prime: Episode One - Aphrodite Prime and the Invaders from Venus 12 (On the Air Series)

I’m such a sucker for classic radio shows, and LeBlanc captures the essence of old radio serials to a tee, right down to the (usually less-than-subtle) product placement advertisements. Robots! Aliens! A sassy heroine! And LOTS of booze! Cliche (i.e. funny) characters across the board, and a “plot” so thin you could thread a needle with it, but you’ll hear his vividly descriptive dialogue in your head as you read. Absolute fun.

  • DC Cathro: Gratitude 31

A short slice-of-life on a city street, a moment really, but rich in feeling despite being light on dialogue. It’s about what isn’t said, and that is the strength and imagination of the piece, leaving the details up to the reader or viewer. Gritty but polite, and just plain real.
