  • Lainie Vansant: Nobody Dies in This Play

I love it when a play tackles a big issue with an unclear answer, and this is one of those plays! Tarnas explores complicated issues about the appropriate balance between community care and healthy boundaries in light of mental health struggles that no one person should have to face alone. I was lucky to get to see a staged reading (via Zoom) at the Great Plains Theatre Commons -- the first of what I'm sure will be many accolades for this script!

  • Lainie Vansant: ELEVATOR GIRL

Women in the audience are sure to be as frustrated as I was watching these men warp Vanessa's ideas into something entirely different. This play is sure to stoke that frustration into meaningful conversations at post-show drinks -- what more could you ask for?

  • Lainie Vansant: The Epiphany of Two Wise Women

First off, I love the idea that some of the Magi must have been women.

Secondly, this sweet show would make the perfect addition to a holiday festival -- it's not about Christmas, but it is Christmas-adjacent. It's heartwarming, and it's Queer. It fits the bill and adds some variety at the same time. Check it out!

  • Lainie Vansant: Rainbow Games

This is such a heartwarming, hopeful look at (found) family and coming out. It offers the kind of hope, light, and queer joy that our world needs to see -- now and always.

  • Lainie Vansant: The Obituary

This play is a dream-like exploration of life and death explored through intersecting transitions in these characters' lives. It opened up new perspectives for me, and I found it quite moving.

  • Lainie Vansant: American Rusałki

As a reader, I really ended up caring about the characters in this play, and I liked that the world was so complicated that it was hard to simply root for their success. Plus, the music is folky and unique in a way that really scratched an itch for me. Lovely, thought-provoking work.

  • Lainie Vansant: Pleasure Play

Campbell has done a brilliant job making this story feel both intimate and epic in scope. My heart aches for all three of these characters in very different ways, and the theatricality is an exciting challenge for designers and directors. This is beautifully written and deserves your time!

  • Lainie Vansant: American Girl(s)

I had the pleasure of seeing a production of this show at KCACTF's Region 5 Festival, and its messiness was just gorgeous. It was clear that the young actors involved were passionate about the story and deeply connected to one another, and I think that sense of sisterhood perfectly encapsulates the overall narrative of this play. Give it a production -- you won't regret it!

  • Lainie Vansant: Stuck in the Middle

I laughed out loud just imagining the stage picture Braverman sets up at the beginning of this piece, then was pleasantly surprised at the depths he manages to explore throughout. This piece is thoughtful, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable all around.

  • Lainie Vansant: Tom Cruise Saves The Planet

This show is so silly and fun -- a nice little dollop of comedy perfect for an evening of short plays
