  • Emily Hageman: THE SAUNA

Really cool piece of theatre that sort of makes you question everything we're doing here. Is there a point in continuing to try to write when it never really seems to get anywhere? The decision at the end to torch the whole thing felt too real. There is a true poignancy to this piece--and I believe every writer has been brought to this at some point during their career. Sharp and clever, I could see this playing well at a ten minute play festival.

  • Lovely and tender and accurate, this is one of O'Grady's best. There is a lot of feeling in this well-researched play--and it brings us a perspective that the audience has likely never seen before. A moment in time so beautifully and intimately portrayed, I feel like I'm sitting right there, invading on it. Well-written as always from O'Grady, one of her best.

  • Emily Hageman: Gun Free

This is an absolutely truly deeply remarkable play. Wow. I am absolutely blown away by this piece. This is so gorgeously felt, so fantastically rendered, and it hurts, it hurts SO MUCH to read and to think about that I can hardly stand it, but I am so grateful for Salsbury and her immense courage to grab that pain and pull it into the front of my heart. The best theatre incites action and all I can think at the end of this play is that this must stop, it must stop now, no more inevitability. Thank you, Salsbury.

  • Emily Hageman: Interventions

Pure delight from start to finish. Lam's voice is so fantastic in this piece--and it's funny and poignant and smart and everything that a great romcom should be. Wildly original and full of all kinds sweet sci-fi, this play is bound to be an audience pleaser. I can see this being performed at tons of ten minute play festivals, and probably winning audience favorite in nearly all of them. Lam is a gifted playwright--and I look forward to exploring more of his work.

  • Emily Hageman: The Swallows

A really wonderful play. King has a brilliant ear for dialogue, and Shawna and Kellie Lynn jump off the page. This is such a strongly written show--great naturalistic dialogue, wonderful humor, a poignancy to it that isn't often showed on stage. There are a lot of really heavy things in this piece, but they are treated realistically and simply. A fantastic slice of life. These two people featured in this play are so much more beautiful than they know. I'm excited to read more of King's work.

  • Emily Hageman: Two Late

What an absolutely wonderful, beautifully crafted play. There is so much going on here--there is humor, but there is also so much poignancy and tenderness. It's incredibly funny, but it's also incredibly beautiful--two people we never would have expected to bond bonding in a strange, strange place. There is so much to love about this play, and it's one of my favorite ten-minutes I think I've ever read. So real, so lovely, and so good. Read this, and then go for more of Maule's work. His understanding and love for people makes this play shine.

  • Emily Hageman: High Holidays

This is such a great play. Fox has such a great modern voice, and the characters just jump off the page--they are sassy and irreverent and rude and I love it. The end is so fantastically poignant, and I love how there is nothing leading up to it. The whole play feels incredibly real--and the stage direction "it tastes like cancer" is officially my #1 favorite thing forever. Great play, great voice, can't wait to read more from Fox.

  • Emily Hageman: Dead Zone - Ten Minute Play

This is a play unlike I have ever seen before, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it at the Midwest Dramatists Convention. It's intensely smart and fantastically well-written--Adams has such a brilliantly creative mind. But more than that, it helped me empathize with fish, which is certainly something that I never thought I would say. It's sincere and clever and it's impossible to watch it without a bit of a smile, but there's such an aching poignancy to it. By the end, I wasn't grinning--I was just feeling and aching. Really well executed.

  • Emily Hageman: Dirt

A play that you never figure out until the end. There are so many layers to this play--first, you think it'll be a romantic comedy, then, a twist out of nowhere changes everything. The language in this play is absolutely phenomenal. Brewer knocks it out of the park at the character descriptions, and only continues from there. This is a play that you can't get out from under your skin.

  • Emily Hageman: The Elephant and the Light in Claire's Suitcase

Tender and gorgeous, Romero has carefully and beautifully crafted this play that leaves so many questions unanswered. The final scene with the lantern is one that would live with audiences forever. The imagery in this piece, the beautiful conversations between Claire and Bruce, the repetition--we may not know everything about this play from the text, but we feel it. Beautifully written.
