  • Emily Hageman: Next Year, Transformers! (Ten Minute)

This is such a lovely and powerfully sincere piece. In just ten short pages, Donnelly gives us everything we need to know about these two people. It's funny, it's relatable, and it's beautifully human. Some truly lovely character work here, and this would be such a fun piece for actors. Lovely, understated, and utterly charming.

  • Emily Hageman: Orange

Wow. This play accomplishes so much in a short nine pages. It's a fascinating character study--Cathro has done a masterful job of engrossing us and beautifully developing each character. You feel like you really know them and understand them--and it's a beautiful, beautiful piece. Minimal staging, minimal technical aspects, but A LOT of feeling and A LOT of heart. Seeing this would be an experience. Read it and you'll know what I mean.

  • Emily Hageman: Overqualified

A fabulous piece of experimental work. "Overqualified" is funny, but it's painful too because it's just too real. Any woman seeking work has felt this way--in fact, many women often feel this way in their day to day life. How can we please the people around us? Vansant ends the play with the simple answer--you can't, and you shouldn't have to. A great piece by a writer with a vibrant voice and a gift for clever staging. To see this performed would be exciting, entertaining, and thought-provoking.

  • Emily Hageman: A Firework Unexploded

Osmundsen is a master of dialogue, and "A Firework Unexploded" is a beautiful example of this. He has such a keen understanding not only of how people talk, but how they relate to each other. This is such a wonderful look at two people--two incredibly real people--sharing an incredibly real moment. It's confusing and complicated and you leave the scene without fully understanding either character (and it feels weird to write that word, character, since they feel so much more like PEOPLE). But that's just life, and Osmundsen has a gift for capturing life.

  • Emily Hageman: Recess

It'd be easy to call this play cute and sweet, but it's so much more. It's beautiful and profound and lovely and incredibly tender. This may be one of the most romantic plays I've ever read, and I'm not ashamed to admit that my throat is a little tight after reading it. Absolutely masterfully created, and truly magical. It'd be such a pleasure to see this on stage.

  • Emily Hageman: The Sweater

Okay, this is absolutely hilarious. As I was reading it, I was like, oh no, this is too real--and then, there's a hilarious twist at the end. Would be perfect for a night of short plays. Absolutely love it, pure delight, and like I said, it's just too real.

  • Emily Hageman: Ashes

Wow, creepy and fun and absolutely fantastic. What a great play for five teenagers to really dig into--the storyline is nuanced, and I know young actors would just love taking a bite out of these complex roles. Genuinely chilling, but also deeply enjoyable. I did not see the end coming. Well done as always, Jolly.

  • Emily Hageman: An Unquiet Past (Original title: Scar Tissues)

Wow. I don't think I'll ever be able to get this play out from under my skin. Triplett is one of the finest ten minute play writers I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The end actually made me physically shiver because my goosebumps were so intense. The fact that this has no production history is absolutely ridiculous. Triplett is fearless and unapologetic, and his play has shaken me to my very core. Wow.

  • Emily Hageman: FAIRVIEW TRAINING CENTER

Utterly stark and strange, but striking nonetheless. Carnes has created a play unlike anything I've ever read--and it will sit with me for quite some time, I am sure of it. There are so many questions asked, and so few answers--but there is the steady rhythm of language, repetition, the comfort and safety it brings, broken up by frightful bursts of dark prose. This play is a poem, and it is deeply haunting. Well done, Carnes.

  • Emily Hageman: A Life Enriching Community

Absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful short play about two wonderful people. This is so charming and so funny and so realistic, it reads so beautifully on the page--I can only imagine what it'd be like to actually see on stage. So many things are touched on so deftly and so carefully, but they are done so with such a light, skilled hand. There is such warmth in this short play. I dare you to read it without smiling.
