  • Emily Hageman: Framing the Shot

This play is absolutely pure delight. It's sharp and funny and madcap and farcical and silly, and I will die unless I am allowed to play Terri Ledbetter at some point. This needs to be on stage. It's creative and hilarious and absolutely fantastic--and it's about two awesome women. What more could you want? This is a real winner, and I am such a huge fan of Maule's work.

  • Emily Hageman: The Record Don't Stop Spinnin' for Robby Ray Robinson

This is plain and simply one of the funniest play I have ever read in my entire life. I really don't even know what to say beyond that. It's pretty much perfect. This play is literally like pure delight in play form. Weird and hilarious and relatable and with a new twist every page. It's absolutely brilliant. And super weird, in the absolute best way. This play has just raised the bar for me for comedic shorts writing, and it needs to be produced like yesterday in a million theaters. That's all.

  • Emily Hageman: One Month Along

There is something so impossibly raw about "One Month Along." There is no pretense to this script. The dialogue is incredibly minimal, and yet somehow, he has painted three incredibly complex portraits of characters that are deeply inscrutable in the most fascinating way. This is one of the most real plays I have ever read. These people are people, real people, and Gonzalez somehow simultaneously writes them with love, but with a clinical quality. They are who they are. They are neither good nor bad. But make no mistake, "One Month Along" is very, very good.

  • Emily Hageman: The Carpenter, the Flood, and the Fart (adapted from Chaucer's Miller's Tale)

Rinkel's bawdy modern take on a Chaucer farce is as hilarious as it is scandalous. How clever to update these old tales in a fresh new way. The verse is written beautifully (which seems funny to say with just how saucy it is!). An extremely unique short play that is fresh, unique, and incredibly funny--and extra points for how it will send all of it's audience members running to Google to research the source material! I know that's what I'll be doing!

  • Emily Hageman: Best Behavior

Everything Weaver writes pours directly from his heart, and this is no exception. This play is so simple, so elegant, so beautiful, and so tender. It's one of the loveliest things I've ever read, and to see it on stage would be breathtaking. There is more than a crack of light in this lovely play--no, it is full of light and joy and beauty. Weaver is a master at capturing the tender things in life without ever losing that sense of innocence, wonder, and truth.

  • Emily Hageman: The Snowmaker

A stark, stunning piece that manipulates you in the best way. Utterly chilling and compelling--and you never really know what's going on until the end, and even then, you still aren't quite sure. The characters are fascinating and you can never quite put your finger on who they are. I truly cannot remember reading a play like this. Seeing this on stage would definitely result in some white knuckles. Great, unique piece from a writer with a very strong voice.

  • Emily Hageman: A Split Second

A magnificent ten minute play. Breathtaking, poetic, gorgeous, truly stunning. O'Grady paints a masterpiece with only a few strokes. Utterly devastating. If you are not familiar with O'Grady's work, now is the time to rectify that--and start here.

  • Emily Hageman: YOUNG VETERAN ADAM AMERSON: A MONOLOGUE

Wyndham is the master of natural dialogue, of subtext, of understatement. This play is full of all three. I love so many of Wyndham's monologues, but this may be his best. There is so much pain sitting right below the surface, blocked off by unrecognized trauma, unseen toxic mentality. I read this monologue some time ago, and I still think about it--and I worry about Adam. This would be a fantastic audition piece.

Poetic and lovely, moving and striking, Kelly has crafted a gorgeous bit of lore that will haunt you afterwards. As mysterious as it is beautiful, this unique ten minute play is full of powerful moments for actors, intriguing tastes of philosophy, and a stunning ending. Looking to try something a little different in your ten minute play festival? Look no further.

  • Emily Hageman: Pussygrabber

This play so perfectly captures a moment that is so real, so powerful, so crippling. I don't even know what to say. This is so powerful. This is everything I felt in that moment and more. Thank you for giving so many of us, SO MANY OF US, a voice, Gina. Thank you for being so brave. Read this piece now because it is so, so, so much more than writing, it is truth and it is pain and it is anger and if you don't understand, read this and you will.
