Donnelly's play takes me back to too many dreaded nights alone waiting for those blasted test results and hearing from friends that who had received theirs and all of us just living like a deer in this virus's headlights. Although it's specifically about AIDS and HIV, Peter and Jason's story itself is all about the bounds of love between two friends or lovers, knowing that it with those friends that we can face each new car on the highway.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Empires

I saw this produced in a Zoom production and what a powerful production it is. With the times that we are living in in America where it seems like we are heading back toward an empire of one type of belief in the hands of one demonic thing, Dunne offers a timeless play of good vs. evil and the roles that are played by people who are just in positions not so much by any worth or actions, but by a divine right that sees them fumbling through their rule without any wise counsel other than their own mad thoughts.

  • Lee R. Lawing: North Pole Justice

Wow! Solomonson delivers a tense and taunt thriller in this cold case play. I can see why this was chosen as one of the best plays for the Smith & Kraus publication. You are on edge from the very beginning, that feeling that you stopped breathing catching up to you as you near the end and what an ending. Surprising and so cleverly constructed. This is a must add to your library if it's not already there!

  • Lee R. Lawing: Doggerel

This was the writer of the day and I'm always pleased to find someone there whose work I know and admire. Doggerel is no different as far as the joy it brings in its terse and tense exchange between two thugs. Like any great piece, this one opens up to so many possibilities, all of them with a little bit of knuckle-biting moments.

Busser's works are always a delight to read and this one is no different. Funny and outrageous, it makes you really think What would we do if we could choose the sex of our child? For me, before my son was born I had thought I would do better with a girl just because I was gay and had always gravitated toward the typical girl toys and play growing up, but when we found it was a boy, I never look back and was just happy that in the end, your child is healthy which makes you a littler wise.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Exit, Pursued by a Bear

Saw this read/performed on Tiny-Theater and it was so well done. Very dark comedy which was funny and exciting to see performed!

  • Lee R. Lawing: Lang

I saw this masterful play read on Tiny-Theatre. Relationships are in themselves so very hard to navigate and I feel that each new generation that comes after the next feels they are more sophisticated than the last one and more open-minded but somehow love still makes us behave like children. I can't even imagine what Lang went through, a creative soul who could have been the head the most powerful studio in Germany, but walks away because he knew what his entire world would become under the shadow of Hitler.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Bingo, the Birthday Clown

We all have those best friends from our childhoods that have helped shaped us, and sometimes those friends were actually ones that we loved on a physical level. The "what could have been" moments of this play will melt your frozen heart when we think about all the relationships that never materialized because of the hate of others and the hate of the church. Bingo arrives in full clown makeup, but we realize his friend was also forced into such a life of hiding and shame because of the trauma instilled on him by his older brother. Bravo.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Achilles & Patroclus

Their tale is a love story for the ages and one that is still being passed down from each new generation that finds their own need to share the bittersweet fates of these two mortal and immortal men. Washburn gives us a poetic version of two men brought together by love and attraction and a destiny that is foretold by the gods which eventually etches their names in the stars and in a song that is forever sung about courage and bravery and love.

  • Lee R. Lawing: E (and T) Go to the Pride Parade

Gordon strikes the perfect combination of honoring all those who came before us with a magical journey through time and space. I love our history so much and am always amazed by those who came before us when it was not an easy time to do so and they were there just like Gertrude and Alice, like E and T and the millions who will come after them to celebrate that thing we call Pride, or in Gordon's word ,Queer Paradise where queer love is enough to sustain you through all this time and all those yet to come.
