  • Lee R. Lawing: 997 Pieces

This was a joy to read and I used to see some similar battles at my Mom's assisted living place over what seemed like the most innocent of things like Bingo. I love the idea of high school kids playing the elderly people as it speaks a lot about personalities sort of being cemented at the younger age and never really changing much as we progress through this little thing called life. That desire to win at games never goes away. A brilliant ending and one that had me cheering for my favorite of the three men.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Fireworks or Gunshots

Thomas holds nothing back in this powerful reflection on America and what it means to be in this country at this time. Gun violence shouldn't be the way it is or the new normal or all of us just sitting and waiting until what happens in Highland Park finally happens in our little part of this country. We were all glued to the television that day watching this unfold, trying to piece together what it really meant and also trying not to become desensitized to this blight that's spreading like a wildfire unchecked.

  • Lee R. Lawing: POOPER: A PhD CANDIDATE MONOLOGUE

We all have that secret spot where it's just easier to process things be it crying or reading or pooping. As with all of Wyndham's work, there are layers upon layers that peel away as our Pooper asks to be let into the stahl and the more we learn, the more we can understand her need to find a place that she can call her own where she can be alone and process what's happened to her on this day like any other day with one big exception.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Reconnaissance

If aliens ever do reconnaissance on our planet I want the SIG and PIE to do that. This plays speaks a lot about hierarchies in any given situations, traditional gender roles and also a shout out to help save our world from it’s untimely doom. In a word, boo-tiful.

  • Lee R. Lawing: A Crooked French Affair

Somewhere deep down you always feel that there's a hope your play is being looked at and really considered for a slot in a festival. I love the energy of this play. From the ingenious beginning where a computer virus has wiped out the entries of the play festival to the irreverent tone it takes toward community theater and egos, and oh, yes, all the while just incredibly funny and spot on with it's digs of the fragility of life and theater and playwrights and actors and the love that we all have for them all.

  • Lee R. Lawing: Cookies for Bethany

Most of us will face a neighbor or two in our lives. They are like death and taxes, unavoidable. Martin gives us a very dark and funny play abut the benefits of neighbors and the downfall. Do yourself a favor and add this one to your library!

  • Lee R. Lawing: Messages

Everyone wants to think they are heard or listened to and so many of us don't want to be forgotten in a world where praise for a few overshadows all of those who deserve the same. Sepia's Messages was my play of the day and I'm so glad it was. Biting and funny with such an important message about how just one message in a bottle can hopefully reach thousands if it's done on TV and if the world is ready to make a change. Let's hope it is.

  • Lee R. Lawing: RECOGNITION [A MONOLOGUE]

Just like a singer who loses their voice must be so very painful to live past, a writer and their words are something that would be hard to even describe what that loss would feel like. Martin does just that in this old so powerful monologue about a poet who feels that she is not worthy of an honor that is being bestowed upon her. As the monologue progresses Wanda shows us a fear about loss that will leave you breathless and unable to speak.

  • Lee R. Lawing: FAWZIE: A HOTEL CHAMBERMAID MONOLOGUE

This was the play of the day for me . As with most every other characters he creates, Wyndham steps out of his own skin and immerses himself into someone whose voice needs to be heard and Fawzie's voice is no different than any of the other brilliant works by him. Bitingly funny because he taps into that humor so well in Fawzie's plight in this oh so welcoming US of A where cowards who want to be sure to leave messages of hate behind to show that only a few are welcome into this land of the free.

  • Lee R. Lawing: BLAME IT ON BARBIE, a four-minute comedy for two women

A pitch perfect short play about leaving the safety of your parent's house and heading off to college. The thing that touched me the most was the daughter's revelation about how maybe she developed her desire for the major she's switching to which reminds us all that children are like sponges and always watching us for guidance and for love..
