  • Donna Hoke: How the Light Gets In

Was fortunate to see a workshop production of this play and it's classic EM Lewis--lyrical, theatrical, and personal. Lewis knows how to distill humanity to its essence, and she does it beautifully here while also imbuing the experience with gorgeous language and symbolism. It opens in LA soon, but let's hope it keeps moving!

  • Donna Hoke: FUCK BUDDY: THE MONOLOGUE

What makes Asher's monologues so strong is their specificity. He uses everything at his disposal--the cold setting to mirror the previous ghosting, the specific clothing props that are removed as things heat up--to create a situation that can never be generic. Having been on both sides of this equation, I'm dying to see the counterpoint to this (but then Asher might end up with a play lol)! Well done!

  • Donna Hoke: The Remote (a ten minute play)

MHL does it again--delivers a snappy short that is long on both laughs and reality. A great vehicle for a pair of actors to show off their comic chops.

  • Donna Hoke: Wonderkid Spells Defeat

I love spelling bees so this one caught my eye. Great radio play for kids that teaches the dangers of relying on what you think you know instead of putting in real effort.

  • Donna Hoke: For the People

Carol's play isn't just great because it tells a compelling story of our competing needs for personal and professional satisfaction, presents the question of "when is a little wrong okay for the greater right?", and does it with knowledge of the inner workings of the political system. It's also GREAT because it does it with a cast of FIVE WOMEN. For all these reasons, it's the deserving production selection from the Detroit New Works Festival 2019 and I hope to get the chance to see it!

  • Donna Hoke: Weep.

I saw a developmental reading of WEEP at the Detroit New Works Festival and was immediately taken in by the smart look at a difficult subject. The language and characters are natural and compelling and I look forward to seeing where this play goes on its journey!

  • Donna Hoke: IN COMMON

Had the privilege of seeing a developmental reading of this at Detroit New Works Festival and was struck by the deep character development and strong dialogue that combined to present a quartet (quintet?) of diverse friends who, while just living their lives, provoke deep questions without polemic. Definitey worth a look!

  • Donna Hoke: Julio Ain't Goin' Down Like That

Stark, poetic, truthful, compelling, theatrical... a beautiful play.

  • Donna Hoke: Tis True, Ma (Ten Minute)

I'm honored to include this play in BUA Takes 10: Stonewall Edition at Buffalo United Artists. It's reflection on changing times and cultures, with the Stonewall monument as backdrop, is the perfect transition into modern day and works beautifully within our evening. Thank you!

  • Donna Hoke: Rebel Judy

I'm honored to include this play in BUA Takes 10: Stonewall Edition at Buffalo United Artists. Taking place in the wee hours following the first Stonewall riot, it beautifully illustrates an incremental change that is the precursor of all that's to come. Thank you!
