  • Donna Hoke: Just A Rumor

Having just spent a year researching Viv and Larry, I was eager to read this play and wasn't disappointed. I loved the immersion into old Hollywood and particularly the themes of what emerges as truth years after the fact. Most enjoyable!

  • Donna Hoke: One is the Road

Sometimes you read a piece where the structure is so perfectly the play and vice versa that you understand what all the talks about structure are all about. Riveting and stunning.

  • Donna Hoke: SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY

A lovely play about the difficulties of overcoming the barriers to generosity and goodness for generosity and goodness's sake. And boy did I feel for Tino when he corrected the teacher; my daughter had the exact same experience lol. Chisa's work has such a grace to it and this one is in her best wheelhouse.

  • Donna Hoke: The Good Deli

Sweet and funny, this play moves quickly like a good road trip comedy should--and arrives at a happy ending.

  • Donna Hoke: THE GARBOLOGISTS

Warm, moving, excellently paced and structured. I'm usually not a fan of unlikely friendship stories but this one really hit me in the feels. What really impressed me is that I almost didn't even realize it was a two-hander because it was that compelling and rich. So well done.

  • Donna Hoke: Evil Eye

Oh I loved this! Reminded me of radio dramas I listed to as a kid, edge-of-your-seat stuff with lots of humor, too. Great job!

  • Donna Hoke: The Wake

There's so much to love about a Tammy Ryan play, the theatricality, the sharp injections of humor, the use of physicality, surprise, sight, and sound. But what I love most of all is the way they sneak up on you: you're just listening to casual conversation, but there's an edge to it, but you're sucked in, lulled, and then all hell breaks loose. The Wake excels at all of this.

  • Donna Hoke: Jesus at 10 (an evening of 10 short plays)

Church groups--who are constantly on the lookout for faith-based plays to present--would do well to look at this series of shorts that can be performed separately or as a complete evening. Presenting plenty of opportunity for discussion, these plays are built from many layers of faith, poetry and, most of all, humanity. Lovely and moving.

  • Donna Hoke: The Window

There's a lot to unpack here in a very short read, and I could probably spend an hour or two doing so! But my biggest takeaway is of course they're friends, or Fish would be dead. Even that is a heavy concept.

  • Donna Hoke: Phillie's Trilogy

I love a saga and I love the way this one builds a careful foundation for the characters' futures with everything they do and say in their pasts. Better still, PHILLIE'S TRILOGY leads to a clever and satisfying meta theme of writing what you know. I particularly loved the depiction of growing up in the seventies, and its sharp contrast of parenting styles.
