  • Emily McClain: The Little American Pie Fight [a 1-minute play]

Dinah's FOMO at the end of this short play is the whipped cream on top of the pie for me. Martin delivers thoughtful commentary on modern life in one brief minute. Hit me in the face with more!

  • Emily McClain: Water Damage

This play tackles so much weighty material in such a short time, but Prillaman's absolute genuis with packing emotional punch in the dialogue as well as stage directions is firing on all cylinders. I love how Rich doesn't experience the haunting as directly as Violet does, but he is still emotionally impacted- as are we the audience. "You're just living in a wound that hasn't quite scarred over yet" gave me chills. So, so good.

  • Emily McClain: Polterguys

Relationships are complicated enough among living people but when you combine Shades, zombies, polergeists, and a Kitsune, it becomes nearly impossible. Frandsen's contemporary comedy is the relationship-horror allegory we need right now and it's a quirky, fast-paced read. It would be a blast to produce! Highly recommend!

  • Emily McClain: ITCH

This play deals with the intense, all-consuming pressure that caring for a family member with mental illness can take on the other members of the family, but in a completly fresh (although quite bizarre) kind of way. Cathro's gift with dynamic and damaged characters creates a truly captivating story. You feel so deeply for every single character in this drama. It's an excellent and compelling piece of theatre, and I look forward to seeing it brought to life someday.

  • Emily McClain: To The Moon!

This play is completely hilarious! Feriend's ear for comic dialogue is perfectly attuned to capturing the unraveling of this uniquely awkward situation. This would be so much fun to stage in a 10-minute play festival and provides so many fabulous moments for the actors to shine. Read and enjoy!

  • Emily McClain: Ellis Marsalis

Thank you for these wonderful words celebrating jazz musician, teacher, and beloved father Ellis Marsalis. The Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble's COVID monologue project is such a powerful experience. This piece was an incredibly moving tribute to him.

  • Emily McClain: Eighty-Seven Keys (a monologue)

The words are powerful enough on the page, but to hear it delivered with conviction and love creates an incredible tribute to the life of a dear, beloved friend and fellow artist. Scott Sickles eloquently captures the pain, regret, and anger we all feel when a life is taken much too soon. The Breath of Fire Latina Theatre Ensemble's COVID monologue project will stand as the artistic testament of our community's loss. It's painful to watch or read these beautiful words, but we must bear witness to this pain and grieve together. Thank you, Scott. I am so sorry.

  • Emily McClain: The Vampire's Venti

I really enjoyed this twist on the vampire story filtered through the "coffee machine" of toxic masculinity. Lee's characters are grounded even when they are supernatural! This would be a fun addition to a Halloween short play festival!

  • Emily McClain: A Right Way to Fold a Fitted Sheet

Any person in a domestic partnership can point to the seemingly stupid squabbles they've had with their partner about trivial matters: the right way to load the dishwasher, the proper organization system for music or movies, or how many plants is too many for the front hallway table (ok that last one might be specific to me but it's fine).
But in A RIGHT WAY TO FOLD A FITTED SHEET, Berl uses the activity of domestic angst to reveal something so deep and rich about the relationship between the two characters and gives us a glimpse into their lives. Brilliant!

  • Emily McClain: The Unused Mask Support Group

We've all thought about it: what happens to the masks when this is all over? Stuffed in a drawer, forgotten like POGS or Tamagotchis? Preserved behind glass that reads "Break In Case Of Outbreak?" Lawing humanizes the stages of grief the un-used masks will probably go through in such an entertaining and insightful way in this short play. Great work!
