  • Samantha Oty: Abridged Theatre History For People Who Have A Cursory Interest* | *(please note we have not verified these facts)

I love a good meta moment in the media I consume. This reminds me of something I read once in high school--that there are really just six plots in the world, but if you give one to seven different writers you'll get seven different stories back. We all ask the same questions in our stories, but how we seek the answers will always change.

  • Samantha Oty: Alien Girls

This one hit close to home. A stunning piece of drama that explores creativity, motherhood, and friendship through humor and poetic language. Berryman utilizes nonlinear storytelling to show the audience who these women are and what they mean to each other--the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  • Samantha Oty: Expecting

This is easily one of the best ten-minute plays I've read. Through beautifully written, natural dialogue, Oduh paints the picture of a loving family-to-be about to face immense tragedy. While this play's topic is heavy and often ignored within society, these stories need to be shared, and I hope to see this play staged so the message can be heard.

  • Samantha Oty: Early One Evening at the Miskatonic University Ladies Auxiliary Book Club

We tried to start a book club once. Three years ago. And we're still waiting for one guy to finish the book. Oh well, at least we can keep using "Gone Girl" as a verb whenever he's being annoying. That being said, as a horror fan, I love the humor of this play, that the Necronomicon is on Oprah Winfrey's Book Club List, and the social commentary on the price of ordering delivery from Dominos.

Ian Donley is a master at writing grief and love. Though brief, he's able to capture these emotions through fully-developed characters with both honesty and humor.

  • Samantha Oty: AFTERMATH

The audience is taken on a journey through grief as two groups try to make sense of a major tragedy--doing so by keeping politics out so we can focus on the people affected. Smith is able to bring a small amount of hope to a hopeless situation. Smith uses empathetic Storytelling to tackle one of the biggest issues plaguing the US.

  • Samantha Oty: Dress (a sort of coda to Romeo and Juliet)

At the end of Romeo and Juliet a mother is left without her only daughter--a grief that no parent should have to endure. Shlichtman paints a brief and tragic picture of how something as mundane as picking a dress can cause a tremendous amount of pain for those left behind.
