  • Becoming Italian - a monologue
    4 Apr. 2024
I caught a reading by Miranda Jonte on Back Porch Theater of this lovely piece by Claudia Haas. I love the use of the smiling photo of the mother who oversees her daughter's endeavors to cook and become more and more Italian by doing so. She embraces who she is, her family's legacy: the power of food to bring us together and to help us connect with our true selves and the generations which have gone before us. Love it. https://fb.watch/rez3nHMrx3/

I read this some time ago but still recall the set up and atmosphere perfectly which is a good sign. The premise is engaging. Lots of interesting slow reveals, build up, use of staging--the dancing etc. Cool opening. Kniess makes some good choices in the flashbacks as well. I love history and mystery and I'm sure audiences will too.

Great fun...until it isn't. I appreciated the five 'act' structure of this one act problem play, crisp, unflinching dialogue and perennially relevant subject matter.

I was delighted to recognize facets of Sickles' * inimitable wit in each of these well crafted characters. And I so enjoyed spending time with them, in the same way I'd loved to have been able to curl up with a martini and listen to Noel Coward entertain his friends in the same eponymous spirit of this fun situational and farcical comedy of manners. I laughed out loud at the many snappy one liners and loved the satisfying deneument.

(*yes, I'm consciously punctuating his name a la Socrates!)
  • The Manners Mafia
    20 Mar. 2024
Feeny-Williams has had her revenge for perhaps a real-life "Maleducazione situation"? Ah, nothing like catharsis. You'll be amused by this short, darkly funny piece full of mafia tropes. Bravissima signorina !
  • THE DATING POOL (10-minute version) comedy
    19 Mar. 2024
Loved this. So many quotable lines. Five facets of the same woman allow five strong female players a lovely range of emotions in only a few minutes. I fell in love with each woman and rooted for her to move forward.

A painfully poetic short play. A huge whallop of emotion in a minute. Life, like this play, is short.
  • Memory (short play)
    13 Mar. 2024
The memory may be fuzzy. But the love is there. A short piece full of promise and possibilities. Could be played many different ways and is a good example of how theatre is collaborative: playwright, performer, director and even a set designer all have their role, even in this very short play. Bravo.

A lucky chance encounter. An unlikely hero. A reminder to never judge a human being by their outward appearance. Superb dialogue. Sound effects for a lucky designer. A well crafted modernized myth.
  • My Vagina Has A First Name
    8 Mar. 2024
Hall has crafted four fun females who are finding much more to talk about than the book they're meant to be discussing. Very funny and entirely relatable -- for women! I can't speak for anyone without a vagina, but if you're lucky enough, one day you just might have YOURS given a superbly funny voice-over on Theatrical Shenanigans: https://theatricalshenanigans.podbean.com/e/international-womens-day-special/?fbclid=IwAR0Fp3-o6OSTPOPp9OnyXCoEUZvStvZLrpWq4glk0VMLpnFJbyj1eFp2E-w
