I love this clever spin on the Cinderella story. Cinderella brings up some valid points about the problems with those shoes and with Prince Charming's notion of what love is. Also, she corrects him when he calls women "girls," and it made me want to be best friends with her - but she would probably say that I don't understand what it means to be best friends, if that's all I think it takes. Because this Cinderella knows who she is, is comfortable in her own skin, and doesn't really care what other people think. What a great short.

This 10 minute play is bizarre in the most wonderful, wonderful way. I was laughing from the opening stage directions. What a crazy trip. I used to write sketch comedy, and one of the guys (Trevor) in my troupe would always submit sketches which caused another guy (Conor) to sigh, "Goddamn it, Trevor, what is wrong with you?" and this play feels like the kind of thing Conor would have that response to, and I don't know how to pay it a higher compliment than that. Wait, yes I do: My friend Trevor would LOVE THIS.
  • Grand Dragon in Power

I didn't know this story about the Grand Dragon of the Klan in Indiana who was convicted of murder and rape in the 1920s. I was completely sucked in and loved watching DC Stephenson get his comeuppance, since politicians these days who spew hate and rape women seem to get away with it. The parallels to today made Stephenson's last line even more unsettling. What a captivating, horrifying, well-written play.
  • No Rest for a Soul

I really enjoyed this short play's take on death and rebirth, and the continuous learning and striving of our souls. It was refreshingly original, which made it so enjoyable to read, and it left me with a lot to think about. That's quite a feat for 8 pages!
  • Dee With The Devil
    20 Oct. 2021
I love plays with devils/angels/Bible characters in them, and this short play is a really great one! Dee manages to trick a devil (not THE Devil - there are lots of devils, you see. Lucifer can't do everything) and I ended up feeling kind of sorry for this creature of Hell. (Like Dee's devil, I'm a rule-follower.) "Dee with the Devil" is clever and engaging from start to finish.
  • Robin Hood & His Merry "Men"
    20 Oct. 2021
I read this one for the title, and it was as fun as I was hoping. It's a great piece for young audiences, and I'm sure girls in the audience would appreciate how many more females there are in this play than in your standard Robin Hood story - not to mention all the fun stuff those females get to do. A nice twist on a story we all know!
  • Impressions of Paris (one act)
    20 Oct. 2021
This play felt like my 11th grade art history class come to life in the best possible way. Hearing the Impressionists discuss what inspires them and seeing them get rejected (even the Impressionists got rejections!) was humanizing, inspiring, and comforting. I enjoyed spending an hour with them and learning from them.

Tis the season for this monologue spoken by an alien dressed up as a human for Halloween! BX19TR33 clearly knows a lot about us, and as they talk about us and all our complexities and paradoxes, it’s funny and touching all at once, because it’s a John Mabey play. Humans are capable of great things, and maybe we’ll remember that before we destroy ourselves and the planet- and if not, at least it will be a wild ride, because that’s how we roll. Just ask BX19TR33.

Whoa, this play! Two playwrights - one successful (Kyle) and one not (Dylan) - meet for drinks and Dylan accuses Kyle of raping him six months ago. And that's just scene ONE. The stakes just go up from there, each new turn more surprising than the last as you watch this toxic relationship unfold between these two men. A great study on what jealousy can do to a person and a perfect example of how just because sexual assault might not always be clear cut, doesn't mean it's not assault. Daniel McCoy has a great ear for dialogue too.
  • Survey No. 5
    14 Oct. 2021
This short solo piece is so creative and fun. I love how the audience is involved: Everyone has a drink in hand as a man recounts the end of two recent relationships of his. Five surveys requiring audience participation are interspersed throughout the play, making it a fun, communal experience. I especially loved the phone call with his mother while he's out buying new, better sheets at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
