  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Grand Dragon in Power

I didn't know this story about the Grand Dragon of the Klan in Indiana who was convicted of murder and rape in the 1920s. I was completely sucked in and loved watching DC Stephenson get his comeuppance, since politicians these days who spew hate and rape women seem to get away with it. The parallels to today made Stephenson's last line even more unsettling. What a captivating, horrifying, well-written play.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: No Rest for a Soul

I really enjoyed this short play's take on death and rebirth, and the continuous learning and striving of our souls. It was refreshingly original, which made it so enjoyable to read, and it left me with a lot to think about. That's quite a feat for 8 pages!

  • I read this one for the title, and it was as fun as I was hoping. It's a great piece for young audiences, and I'm sure girls in the audience would appreciate how many more females there are in this play than in your standard Robin Hood story - not to mention all the fun stuff those females get to do. A nice twist on a story we all know!

  • This play felt like my 11th grade art history class come to life in the best possible way. Hearing the Impressionists discuss what inspires them and seeing them get rejected (even the Impressionists got rejections!) was humanizing, inspiring, and comforting. I enjoyed spending an hour with them and learning from them.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Earthling Lover

Tis the season for this monologue spoken by an alien dressed up as a human for Halloween! BX19TR33 clearly knows a lot about us, and as they talk about us and all our complexities and paradoxes, it’s funny and touching all at once, because it’s a John Mabey play. Humans are capable of great things, and maybe we’ll remember that before we destroy ourselves and the planet- and if not, at least it will be a wild ride, because that’s how we roll. Just ask BX19TR33.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Perfect Teeth

Whoa, this play! Two playwrights - one successful (Kyle) and one not (Dylan) - meet for drinks and Dylan accuses Kyle of raping him six months ago. And that's just scene ONE. The stakes just go up from there, each new turn more surprising than the last as you watch this toxic relationship unfold between these two men. A great study on what jealousy can do to a person and a perfect example of how just because sexual assault might not always be clear cut, doesn't mean it's not assault. Daniel McCoy has a great ear for dialogue too.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Survey No. 5

This short solo piece is so creative and fun. I love how the audience is involved: Everyone has a drink in hand as a man recounts the end of two recent relationships of his. Five surveys requiring audience participation are interspersed throughout the play, making it a fun, communal experience. I especially loved the phone call with his mother while he's out buying new, better sheets at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Zero

I've never read a play like this. It's about a group of teenagers in a reform school for dangerous teens. It's about a giant, gaping, other-worldly hole in the ground. It's about a missing iguana. It's about the concept of nothing, and whether or not nothing actually exists. And when you take it all together.. wow, what a ride. It's hard to write dialogue for teenagers, but Ian August nails it. This play is about so much darkness, and so much hope. It's wonderful.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: Danforth Street, January 6

This short audio play is so simple, but so powerful. Set on January 6, 2021, it speaks to the polarizing effects of present-day politics in the United States and how hard it is to be neighborly to neighbors who support what you find unsupportable. It's topical, relatable, and ultimately hopeful.

  • Lisa Dellagiarino Feriend: The Taste of Emeralds

Oooh this play straddles the line between dark comedy and ghost story. Equal parts hilarious and creepy, it pulls you along as more of the sisters' "secret secrets" are revealed. I felt very much like Derek, the poor guy who married into this unconventional family and kept repeating "WHAT?!" as more and more of these sisters' unsettling past was revealed. A perfect story for this spooky time of year!
