  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Beautiful Blessed Child

This has all the makings of a modern classic Japanese-American road trip story. Even on the page, this dialogue & stage direction & subtext absolutely shimmers, layered & real & surreal & precise & ragged in the best way. There is so much here for everybody involved in this production to sink their teeth into, from actors to lighting designer, & it's a lucky audience (hopefully many audiences!) that get to see the whole thing pulled together.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Theoni V. Aldredge, Costume Designer, Speaks (monologue)

This was a charming way to get to know an accomplished woman I knew nothing about — but whose work I have apparently seen all my life! A delicious meal for an older actress.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Hidden Potential, or The Straight Gene

From this sample, I am hooked! This play explores big picture questions about genetics, technology, & how society adapts to having more information, but it does it through characters who are very much individuals with their own thing going on. & it’s hilarious.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Outside of Here (a 12-hour play)

An ambitious concept, & a play well worth getting to know. The play may take 12 hours in real time, but the script will take about half an hour to read (or the supercut video will take you 16 minutes to watch), & by the end you will understand why it had to be 12 hours. The characters may repeat their words, but they each come in with a fresh perspective. Just like we all do.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Three Women of Swatow

A killer play about 3 women frantically unraveling what has happened over 3 generations in their family, & what will happen next. The dialogue is funny, but the consequences are real. The audio version of this play on the Play Me podcast is excellent.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Selfie

You can listen to an audio version of this play on the CBC PlayMe podcast — & you should. Quintana depicts each of her characters with believably conflicting perceptions of reality, showing how the way we see even those we feel closest to can be warped through the filters of gender, expectation, & as the title implies, social media.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: a seussified grindr date

A situation that could be dead serious, told in a dead silly style, without losing sight of the stakes.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: October

The way these characters see each other too clearly & yet miss each other entirely will be heartbreakingly familiar to anyone who’s ever been young, queer, in love, & unready.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Do Not Resuscitate: A Mini Play About The Able-Bodied

This is such good satire. It's surface-level hilarious, what with the sticky noodle arms & all, & then those noodly appendages drag you down to a really dark place & make you think about some real grim shit.

  • Emmet L.F. Cameron: Closing Doors

The voices of teachers are so essential in the fight for safer schools (which should include safety for teachers!), & John Minigan writes from experience. It's so valuable for theatre to reflect these personal-political moments of rifts in relationships caught up in systemic struggles. & we can always use more plays about the labour issues at the heart of just about every other social issue. Highly recommend the performance & interview on Gather by the Ghostlight.
