  • Shaun Leisher: Birds Aren't Real

A really zany yet heart-breaking depiction of grief during pandemic times. Can't see what talented actors will be able to bring to these brilliantly crafted roles.

  • Shaun Leisher: Women Who Hate Their Jobs

This play was a lot of fun to read. So often we only get to see ambitious women who love their careers depicted so it's refreshing to hear from a wide variety of women who hate and/or are constantly questioning the work they do.

  • Shaun Leisher: In the Same Space

An incredible play that looks at such a huge issue like gentrification through the eyes of everyday New Yorkers just going about their lives. So many important questions are being asked here about race and class and what it means to actually belong. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters and their world and I look forward to seeing it fully produced one day.

  • Shaun Leisher: Cupid's Corner

This play genuinely surprised me at the end. I did exactly what these characters do to each other and I assumed. This is a play that is at its core about two women that believe they know exactly what they want out of life. They force each other to question those beliefs and despite how much they dislike each other they end up learning so much about themselves from each other. All this while also being a super sexy futuristic comedy.

  • Shaun Leisher: KINDERGARDEN

I am in awe of how the writer depicts young girlhood here. How they explore the difference between normal and abnormal behavior is so compelling and heartbreaking.

  • Shaun Leisher: Mirrors

Femia has such a gift for capturing fly on the wall moments in people's lives. This is a heavy moment between mother and daughter but Femia is able to show the love and connection especially in the moments when nothing is said.

  • Shaun Leisher: Now What?

This play transported me back to the horrible night that was the 2016 election. It's definitely a play that speaks directly to that moment in history and the immediate aftermath but it's one that doesn't become less relevant when Trump leaves office. That final moment is a call to action because we have so much of a mess to clean up from the last four years and America is still a nation that is built on oppression. It's going to be quite a long time before this play stops striking a chord.

  • Shaun Leisher: Kiss Me or Cut Off My Head

Through the use of poetry and documentary theatre, Haney has created a stunning piece of theatre that needs to be heard. This is the reminder that we need that sexual violence has been a problem for far too long and is something that effects so many. Hopefully plays like this will serve as a call to action that is so very necessary.

Audrey Lang has such a gift for writing plays about kids who don't get to just be kids. Kids that have to grow up so much faster than they should either through familial dynamics or their own ambition. Lang also capture so well the way girls can be cruel to each other due to the pressures that are forced upon them. These are the plays that need to be performed in high school theatre programs.
