  • Shaun Leisher: Paradise Lost and Found

Feels like a choreopoem more than your traditional piece of theatre. Hambley is so good at creating space and tone for this play featuring some deep characters. Definitely get some Beckett/Satre vibes here while also being its own thing as a worthy entry to a new canon of existentialist theatre.

  • Shaun Leisher: Skin Song

Sensuality oozes off of every page of this play. How do you write about characters that have trouble communicating with each other in a medium that depends so deeply on human connection? Gwynn has beautifully captured a series of moments between these characters that so badly want to be understood by each other but can't find the ways. I love how this inability to speak and hear can come from physical conditions like being deaf or mute or something like toxic masculinity. Gwynn has crafted a piece of theatre that will roll around in my head for a long time.

  • Shaun Leisher: Actually, Honestly Going to Fucking Die

This play left me breathless. As a sober person I connected to so much going on here. This is an absurdist piece that I really hopes get produced. Love how Zubel is writing the impossible here about something so visceral and real.

Best modern-day Shakespeare adaptation I've read in a very long time. Lin looks at things like gender, race and class in such a nuanced way. These characters are so complex and the constant raising of the stakes for them kept me engrossed the entire time. The elements of stage craft also make me excited about how terrifying this play could be in the hands of an adventurous creative team.

  • Shaun Leisher: 39 Revolutions

Wowwwww. Just wowwww. I really didn't know what to expect going into this play and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. This play flies at a feverish pace until it needs everything to be still and pay close attention. This is a play about people who really want to do and say the right things but don't always know how. The magic in this play is stunning and I can't wait to see it fully produced.

  • Shaun Leisher: THE JOY LUCK CLUB IS A F*CKING FARCE AND HERE'S WHY

Love how big a punch this piece packs in such a short number of pages. I feel like trauma porn that focuses on Asian women has not been looked at as critically as it needs to be. I hope that this is the last piece like this that Alex Lin has to write because she has so much more to say and it's up to we white theatremakers to pay attention.

  • Shaun Leisher: HELEN MIRREN TAKES A DAY OFF

Ya know when you just read something that gets you so ecstatic at the possiblility that you will one day get to see a talented, versatile actor speak these delicious words? That's how I felt after page one of this fantastic monologue. Lin explores things like celebrity culture and the craft of acting in this piece and I love the choice to have Helen Mirren work on Queen Margaret. An actress unraveling before our eyes playing a character that famously does the same. It's definitely an absurd farce but in ends on such a tender note that was delightfully unexpected.

  • Shaun Leisher: HAUS VVIVES

So easy to tell that Lin is well versed in both reality TV tropes and people from New Jersey. Evidence that what we are made to believe is "real" is nothing more than compelling theatre.

  • Shaun Leisher: Red Hood(ie)

Such a fresh take on a classic story that honestly portrays the pressing issue of eldercare. Excited to see actors take on these roles.

  • Shaun Leisher: Anxiety Play OR Everybody Pees

The way Barsanti depicts anxiety in this play with such honesty and nuance is astounding. The experiences in this play feel so universal and that's in large part to have specifically and carefully these characters have been written. I'm also obsessed with the device of the escape room. It's such a brilliant way to force these characters together and amp up the stakes and conflict. Plays about people achieving a tangible task are so fun!!!
