Saw this play a couple days ago during it's world premiere run at Azuka Theatre in Philadelphia. It's a brilliant 2 hander that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats for all 70 minutes. That's right 70 minutes!! I wish more writers had this gift that R. Eric Thomas does to say all they need to say in such a tight run time. Not one word is wasted nor one moment unimportant. PRODUCE THIS PLAY!!!

Besides being an important play that addresses a relevant social issue, it's a play that pushes the boundaries. Social media and online communication is hard to convey on stage but it's part of our lives. Acker is holding a mirror up to nature by making a play all about impersonal relationships. So excited this is being done at Azuka next year and excited to see a director dig into the form and content of this challenging piece.

  • Shaun Leisher: Losing My Religion (in 140 Characters or Less)

Got a chance to read this play and listen to the reading on the At The Table podcast and I've come to the conclusion that this play needs to be produced everywhere. So relevant today in this world where bigoted religious extremists are emboldened to hate more by Trump. It will make you laugh and definitely start conversations. Hannah Langley has done an incredible job finding humanity in such despicable people.

I remember reading anyone living in a pretty how town in high school and like most teens the existential dread of growing up went over my head. Reading it again on the last page of this script I have found a new understanding and deeper connection to it. I have this adaptation to thank for that. A beautiful short play that will challenge actors and audiences and render speechless or who come in contact with it.

This is a play with a clear message but it's certainly not preachy in any way. The dialogue flows so well. In such a short piece, you feel like you know these characters so well not just as archetypes but fully fleshed humans.

I feel the topic of this play is one that would be typically handled in a broadly comedic way but in the hand's of Gina Femia it is a meditation on life, death, regret and the treatment of those the dominant culture labels "other." I'm not saying it's not at times funny but it's really heartbreaking and beautiful piece that is an absolute gift for an actor longing to test the limits of their versatility.

So glad that this play is part of the PlayPenn conference this year. It's a play that asks audiences to see people that we demonize as humans and help us understand the choices they make.

This play is a punch in the gut and so vital. Produce this play and get your community talking.

  • Shaun Leisher: Baghdad Wedding

In the early 2000s, the media presented us with the image of Iraqis as either religious extremists or grateful recipients of "American aid." This play shows the Iraqi invasion through the eyes of free-thinking, intellectual young men as they decide whether to try to hold on to hope that their country will be good again or find a life elsewhere. The way this play uses the format of storytelling and narration is so effective.

This is a really interesting play that poses some really tough questions. It asks audiences to consider their views on things like privilege and race. In a world that oozes with misogyny, the choice to have this play populated solely by women makes sense and provides actresses with really great roles to dig into.
