  • Julie Brandon has brough us another monologue that rips family politeness off its adhesion. It is all the things a monologue should be: well-written, an interesting character and a connection to so many people (we all hear stories) -- It dares to say what few families say to each other. It is chilling. Breathtaking. Human. Well done, Brandon.

  • Rich Helms has taken us on a marital journey - a journey of life and a journey that sets us on the road of a 'caretaker's and caregiver's'. The sensibility of this piece is so real, it's as if we're sitting in the character's kitchen, each with a beer late into the night, reviewing our lives. The marriage discussed is a solid one but the third member of this grouping is cancer. But we are in it as with a good friend - it does not ask for tears. It asks for an ear. Well done.

  • Do you happen to remember those old 'You are there' books? Well, in Wyndham's NAVY WIFE: A MONOLOGUE, you are there. The tension in this evacuation is remarkably real as she gathers her children gets them packed and ready to go in 10 minutes. The war in this monologue is hell as is the life of a Navy Wife. We know each character - even the locale is a character as they run to escape the war. Kudos to Wyndham.

  • I love Isaac's monologue about his love of the past as described to his love of the present. This is the only piece I know from the series but I'm certainly looking for me. Isaac's truth about himself and his feelings that fill the universe are as magnetic as can be. And it's not like he's perfect because he's not. It's like listening to your best friend. Another win for Scott Sickles!

  • It's tough when stuff gets in the way of your relationship - whether it's books and CDs or not being able to come clean - What is most important? We have either been one of the characters in this play or know them - but Robert Weibezahl's ERSTWHILE craftily creates a comedy full of twists that are lots of fun. A fun addition for a festival or evening!

  • D. Lee Miller: Erstwhile

Two boyhood friends reunite after decades. We hear how Ernie has made sense of his life which helps the boy in him crawl out of his soul to meet Billy again. William has found him in the park. Both are grown and yet both are open to rekindling their crushes. What a sweet love story this is! Well done, Sam Heyman.

DC Cathro in ERSTWHILE, pulls back the curtain on musical wizards: Dylan and Jerome. They've been around and around and around and still have so much to learn. I love these guys. They know each other very well except about what we think of as important. And it's time to name their newest album - the toughest task of all? This is about the past and the future and yes, I would listen to these two read the phone book together. Love it.

This crown jewel of a play turns a different facet when we realize who we are actually watching in Philip Middletown Williams' ERSTWHILE. We haven't heard this story yet. As these two unemployed men discuss freedom, we are also parsing their lives only to find they don't even have each other. A thoughtful, quiet play that is the wrapping on the most exposed lives. Nicely done.

ERSTWHILE,by Debra A. Cole, is a lovely play where a senior couple can watch their same selves at the beginning of the journey parenthood. The nostalgia and hope and anxiety and composure are seamlessly written leaving us with a sweet and calm view of life itself. So nicely done.
