  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: No Clock In The Forest

What power nostalgia carries, a longing for what we had and what we wished we would become.
This play carries a bittersweetness that struck me at the core. Rosalind and Orlando, as I've never seen them before and a reminder that even though some things end, some traditions never do. Beautiful.

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: Body Horror

This play is one for the girlies, and it's a big slay.
What a fun coming of age comedy that does a great job balancing the genius of teenage girls with the naivety of youth.
And then of course there's the "RELIGIOUS ECSTASY"?!
The title might be BODY HORROR but this piece is a silly-goofy mood and it's so much fun!

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: Communal Table

I had the pleasure of seeing this show live, and I've been thinking about it ever since.
COMMUNAL TABLE by Jenny Lyn Bader is a hilarious comedy with such an interesting concept: Three strangers at the same table, finding common ground and driving each other crazy.
All three characters are uniquely vibrant, and the way they respond to each other is so entertaining. The dialogue is flavorful (and thankfully skim-free, because skim should not be the default) and thought-provoking.
I love this piece. Applause applause applause!

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: Glass Slipper, Size 8 1/2

What a creative concept for a play: personifying the hypothetical situations and conversations Ella imagines...genius. GLASS SLIPPER, SIZE 8 1/2 is so silly and so creative.

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: Clyt; or, The Bathtub Play

    I have chills. AHHH!
As someone who's always rooted for Clytemnestra, this piece is something I needed to read. Elisabeth Giffin Speckman puts The Oresteia into modern perspective and finally lets the women have a say. And in the end, it's femininity that gives our queen the final word.
I am in love with the experimental structure and the artistic ambiguity that provides so much space for actors, directors, and designers to play.
What a powerful piece. If I ever got the chance to see or work on this play, it would be an honor.
    Love it!

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: The Frontier Casino

    Uncanny. Bittersweet. Important.
In a world of rapidly increasing technical advances, especially with the current writer's strike and the rise of AI, this play is an important look at the dangers of a future built on corporate greed. The story of Angel and Bud is a cautionary tale, but Kenney also offers hope in the idea of empathy and humanity.
Also, the thought of stars as "angelic bullet holes" is so interesting and I will be thinking about that for a long time. So good!

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: THE RIGHT WHALE

On their Whale Watching cruise, two partners make it a day to remember. Emotions run high, surprises are shared, lunches are lost, and in the end the true miracle is the love we have for one another.
When I tell you I cried the first time I read this play... It's so well-written, sweet, funny, and chock full of whale trivia... sorry, ~facts~ about the conditions of a species that needs to be protected. THE RIGHT WHALE is the right play for your next festival or season!

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: Hashtag Jones (short)

This piece is a powerful representation of the ways twists facts into lies and narratives to make points instead of listening to the truth and preventing tragedy from happening again. HASHTAG JONES is an important piece that everyone should read.

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: 19 Excellent Reasons to Date Matthew Weaver (a monologue)

I'm screaming. What starts out as a silly, tongue-in-cheek monologue about rizz, evolves into a profound testament to unconditional love for oneself and the world around them; a lesson in consent; a poem about the people we love and why we love them; a healing journey; an invitation. New audition monologue alert(?) I'm a fan.

  • Hannah Lee DeFrates: The Happy Incident on Aisle 5 of the Delicioso Food Market & Deli at 11:47 P.M., or, In Passing [a 1-minute play]

This play was just so joyful! Such a good vibe. Martin's three characters make me want to go out and romanticize life. This is why people love the theatre.
